Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology is the specialty of Dentistry and Pathology that investigates the cause, nature, process and effects of the diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions. It is a core subject, the link between basic science and clinical dentistry and medicine. The department of Oral Pathology & Microbiology provides a centre for teaching scholarly activities, deals with patient care and is concerned with the diagnosis of a wide range of abnormalities in the oral and maxillofacial region. It is the specialty of Dentistry which deals with the assessment of patients’ overall health status and its impact on oral health care. The goal is to develop the dental students’ knowledge and skill in comprehensive patient evaluation and diagnosis. The department educates the future dentists and dental specialists through its Undergraduate Bachelors’ of Dental Science (BDS) course as well as post graduate Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) professional degree. The educational program of the department is comprised of a broad range of didactic and clinical activities catering to undergraduate and post-graduate students. The departmental activities include Undergraduate teaching, Post Graduate training and to provide Clinical support to the patients apart from carrying out Research projects. The department also provide legal assistance in forensic deontology cases.

            The state of art department is well equipped with the best equipments like automatic tissue processor, fully automatic microtome, wax embedding chamber, freezing chamber, deep freezer, biochemical auto analyser, adequate number of microscopes, microscopic slides, study models, charts, hard and soft tissue specimens and pathology museum for undergraduate and Post Graduate training. The department also possesses fine infrastructure like, research microscopes with polarizing, phase contrast, fluorescent, photo micrographic and dual head attachments required for post graduate training and research purposes. The well equipped clinical, haematological, microbiological, histo and immunohistochemical laboratories aid to develop standard reports in diagnosis.

             The Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology, Govt. Dental College Trivandrum is a major reference centre (Tertiary level) for Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology consultation catering to the needs of all hospitals and teaching institutions of the state as well as neighbouring regions. The Department provides biopsy service as well as clinical haematologic facilities to all patients treated at the hospital. The department’s turnover of surgical pathology cases is approximately 10-15 biopsies as well as around 25 hematologic reports per day.
